Vogue Magazine History: Celebrating 120 Years

Posted on by Icy Twan in LATEST | Comments Off on Vogue Magazine History: Celebrating 120 Years

Vogue Magazine was created in 1892 by Arthur Baldwin Turnure in New York City. The magazine started out as a socialite, high status magazine for women as well as men. It was not until Conde Nast took over Vogue Magazine in 1909, that it became a predominately women’s fashion magazine. The covers of Vogue were to specifically display the best illustrations and photographs surrounding the magnificent world of fashion. By the Great Depression sales of the magazine seemingly soared and fashion houses and designers were all working and wanting to get their pieces displayed in the acclaimed magazine.

By 1988 Anna Wintour, an English journalist who was previously Editor in Chief at British Vogue, took the top spot as the Editor in Chief in the United States. Wintour is best known for her cut to perfection bob, dark sunglasses, and her authoritarian style of leading; which intimidates every assistant she has ever had, as well as the entire fashion world.
In 2003 Lauren Weisberger a former assistant for Wintour, published a novel entitled “Devil Wears Prada” which was supposedly reflecting her years working for Vogue.

The novel was later made in to a film in 2006, starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. The movie showed Wintour to be a cold tyrant, and further sealed her name as “the dragon lady”. She may not be the easiest to work with but her work ethic and skill for the job is absolutely undeniable. Once in fashion you will learn that her opinion is the only one that matters.
From the success of Vogue, there is now Vogue UK, Vogue France, Vogue Russia, Vogue Brazil; as well as Teen Vogue which launched in 2001, Vogue Living, and Men’s Vogue. The magazine encourages reporting on cultural and political issues to reflect the concerns of a modern working woman. Vogue’s 120 years has helped change the average woman and fashion as we know it. It is not opinion when we say Vogue is the most influential fashion magazine now and forever.

Sag Awards

Posted on by Icy Twan in LATEST | Comments Off on Sag Awards

Last night SAG Awards, was an elegant night to remember—from the red carpet best dressed, to the award winners. All the stars came out looking stunning…some took risks and succeeded—some didn’t. Hemlines and color were the absolute key factors when it came to deciding who looked the best! I can’t remember an awards ceremony where designers banded together in full support of color—a channeling of the best in color. It’s usual to see some stars look stunning, but almost everyone looked stunning last night! Whereas, there were some that absolutely gorgeous and could not go unnoticed, here are my choices of best dressed:

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: From Hollywood darlings to Fashion trailblazers

Posted on by Icy Twan in LATEST | Comments Off on Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: From Hollywood darlings to Fashion trailblazers

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: From Hollywood darlings to Fashion trailblazers The Olsen’s burst onto the scene as Michelle Tanner in the highly popular 90s sitcom Full House, before they could even talk. From the show The Olsen Twins created a brand, and went on to producing TV shows, movies, a cosmetic line, furniture, and their most thrilling venture yet…fashion. Mary-Kate Olsen was one of the first to push “boho-chic” into the public eye.

The big glasses, oversized sweaters, the very thin waist and beach/bed hair were all a part of “the look.” Ashley opted for a more classic look with red lips, and while Mary-Kate plays a brunette, blonde hair has always been Ashley’s choice. The two have a slightly different style, which compliments the pair the best. These two fashion icons in the making don’t just look the part they are key players in the world of high-fashion.

The twins have created a high end couture fashion line called “The Row” and it is nothing short of perfection. The garments are very classic pieces full of wearable everyday clean items. It is slightly over priced, but it’s the Olsen Twins and it is a high end line so what do you expect. This timeless collection and brand is worth every penny, and are selling like hotcakes. With all that being said, there should be no question why the dynamic duo graced the covers of Vogue: Best Dressed issue. These two are talented, smart and edgy and I am excited to see what their next move will be when it relates to fashion.

FRONT ROW REVIEW Givenchy Haute Couture SS 2012

Posted on by Icy Twan in LATEST | Comments Off on FRONT ROW REVIEW Givenchy Haute Couture SS 2012

The Haute-est of haute couture has been shaping the Paris all week. Whereas on day two of the shows Givenchy, the modest of the shows, has presented extraordinaire craftsmanship of— giant art-deco crystal earrings that danced alongside studded leather jackets and 1930’s nubuck crocodile skin dresses and long bleached and dyed tulle dresses. Pieces were presented on mannequins divided in three 18th century showrooms, just like the historic artifacts in the Louvre museum, this way the 10 pieces design aesthetics could be studied and viewed, persay fashionably appreciated. One floor-length dress looked conventional enough, until it was opened to reveal studs all over the inside. It has apparently become the most-wanted piece of the collection.

Riccardo Tisci said, “his two inspirations this season were the 1927 Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and the theme music from a more obscure Russian film, 1924’s Aelita: Queen of Mars.” A first look at this collection seems misleading, but at a second second look you can see where he was only working to establish a timeless identity—and what a very unique identity it is! This collection is nothing but greatness.Take a look at the intricate pieces of Givenchy Haute Couture S/S 2012.

Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2012

Posted on by Icy Twan in LATEST | Comments Off on Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2012

Dean and Dan sure know how to mix fabrics in a nice way. The twins imaginations are very wise. The high school themed show just made me wish I had all this clothing in 2009. However, about the approach to the collection, which for the main part remained resolutely Dsquared2, with its distressed low-rise denim, fitted biker jackets and collegiate sweatshirts. The shaggy mohair and angora Fair Isle sweaters and great tailoring elements, like the tweed car coat, fitted suits and clean-cut camel coat which makes you want to throw out all your fall clothing and make room for the whole collection.
